Most US and UK universities accept NECO (National Examination Council) for international undergraduate admission from Nigerians. The majority of them allow NECO even if their entrance websites may clearly mention WAEC. That is to say that the possibility of NECO being accepted is up to the school of your choice. 1. Brandon University
Brandon University is one of the best universities in Canada that accepts NECO results from Nigerians. This university is also home to students from over 30 different nations and several continents. NECO, and even WAEC, and other general certificates of education are acceptable at Brandon University.
However, to gain admission admitted, you must pass 5 subjects, including English and Mathematics. Two of these courses also need to be passed at the advanced level.
Also, you have to send your English proficiency test results in a sealed envelope formally signed by exam officials. Use TOEFL to electronically submit your TOEFL scores (ETS).
2. Sheffield University
Sheffield University is a top UK research university Sheffield University is known for being a member of the Russell Group. In addition to being a respected member of the Rusell Group, the university has won 5 Noble prizes.
Sheffield University will accept NECO results, but only in certain circumstances:
- You must receive a C in English in your NECO.
- If your NECO score is good, you may not require the IELTS.
- NECO results shouldn’t be released more than 5 years before the beginning of your programs.
If you don’t have any other documentation of your English competence, you can instead present an official letter from a previous employer attesting to your English fluency. Note that your letter must mention your start date at the company and how you used English.
3. Plymouth University
Plymouth University requirements are quite easy to meet, and that includes Neco to study abroad. You need a NECO score of C6 for the English language requirements for undergraduate and graduate programs, which is accepted by Plymouth. Also, you can use a WAEC equivalent if your NECO does not meet the criteria.
As an alternative, consider completing the institution’s English language requirement by enrolling in a pre-sessional English language course. Note that RQF 6 (degree level) and above courses may require more than just your NECO grade.
4. Manchester University
Another prestigious UK university that accepts NECO results is Manchester University with more than 40,250 students and more than 9,000 admitted as international students.
You must have a B2 Grade overall on your NECO results in 5 subjects, including Mathematics and Physics to be considered for admission. Additional requirements include passing additional subjects with a C4 or better, including English.
5. University of Kent
With more than 20,000 students, the University of Kent, originally the University of Kent at Canterbury, is one of the largest in the UK. The university is well known for its superb research facilities, modern libraries, and top-notch career counseling for students.
NECO scores are taken into account by the University of Kent for admission, although there are some additional prerequisites. For example, you need a grade of C or higher in at least 5 subjects, including English. You can advance into your desired degrees for programs that require higher average grades by completing foundation programs.
6. University of Regina
Yes, University of Regina accepts NECO, and this is a Canadian university. You can use this opportunity to study and work in Canada. To apply online, here’s what you need to do:

- Submit your NECO Results using a scratch card. Provide:
- For NECO: Examination Year, Type, Token (or PIN), Registration Number.
- Send front and back of post-high school transcripts. They should come directly from the institution, either digitally from the registrar’s email or mailed in a sealed envelope to:

- Include your English Language Proficiency test results. A pass in English is acceptable.
- Attach a copy of your passport.
- Provide gap information if you’ve had any education after high school.

If you lack ELP, a Conditional Letter of Acceptance is possible if you’re academically qualified.
7. Michigan Technological University
MTU 100% accepts NECO. To apply, first complete the Common Application and pay a one-time, nonrefundable fee of $35 USD. During this process, you’ll create an account on the Application Portal, which is where you can check your application’s status.
You need to arrange for your official secondary school (high school) transcripts or attested mark sheets to be sent directly to international@mtu.edu from your school. This school can’t accept them if you send them yourself. These documents should include your grades for the past 3 years. If you’ve been to multiple schools in the last three years, each school must send their official transcripts.

You also need to submit an English proficiency test score. Depending on your country of origin or if you’ve studied in the US before, this requirement might be waived.
Which Countries Accept NECO Results?
NECO administers several standardized tests, including the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) for students in their final years of secondary school. However, NECO is a Nigerian examination board, so the acceptance of NECO results are mostly restricted to Nigerian institutions and potentially other African countries. This does not mean that you can’t apply for admission abroad with NECO, but only as long as your preferred school specifies it. Nevertheless, as long your school of choice specifies NECO, you’re good to go. NECO results are just evidence of your secondary education. I advise you to obtain other qualifications that are internationally recognized and accepted, such as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), GCE, or TOEFL/IELTS.
Can I Use NECO Result to Study in America?
You can use NECO to study in America as long as it is specified on your school of choice website. The truth is that not all American schools recognize NECO, so you have to do the due diligence of research and ask questions to know whether the specific university abroad accepts NECO. Some of the universities in the United States I’m aware of consider NECO results as part of the admissions process, so get other possible requirements like language proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS), admission tests (SAT/ACT), and personal statement ready. Some US universities accept secondary education such as the American high school diploma or the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma.
Does UK Schools Accept NECO?
UK schools accept NECO. If you have seen your preferred school, your next finding is to confirm that NECO is accepted. NECO results may be one of the requirements to gain entry into universities in the United Kingdom, but your chances will not be high. I suggest you add other requirements such as language proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS).
